Ideally, a morphological annotation scheme should encode all and only morphosyn- tactic information, abstracting away from spoken and written form. Annotation schemes based directly on the component morphs inherit the difficulties of segmentation, in particular for fused morphemes and suppletive forms. In this paper we propose an indirect annotation scheme based on binary morphosyntactic features (attribute–value pairs) arranged in a tree in such a manner that only positive (marked) features can dominate other nodes. This restriction makes it possible to convert the structure to unary features, thereby directly reflecting the markedness of a form. In the last part of the paper we describe some applied computational systems that employ this annotation scheme.
